Chuck Tiranno and dogs after a HRT. Lucky is on the far right.

Lucky died at 6:30 p.m. unexpectedly as I arrived home from work. She died of bloat. Lucky was firming up to run her 9th season of Master tests. As time passed, I would run Lucky once or twice a year just for fun for the both of us. She qualified in her first Master at age two, and ran her last at Western New York, at age ten. In all Lucky had 27 Master Qualifying scores. (View Lucky's AKC Award Sheet)

Lucky was the last one puppy litter from her respected mother, Kerrybrook's Sable Minx MH -- hence her name. She was sired by Kerrybrook's Drake Can Do MH.

My sincere gratitude to Brian Hartfield for taking over and helping me with the big stuff when my time would not permit the type of set ups Lucky needed to become a truly finished retriever. Brian and Lucky were an awesome team.

Several of Lucky's offspring became the foundation for or in the breeding program of several dual purpose kennels.

I will remember Lucky for her excellence at big, complicated water blinds. She was honest, willing and just plain good. After stopping her on a whistle, Lucky's little head would look up high two or three hundred yards out, yearning to see where to go next. It was cool. Even at age eleven, no other dog, no matter what age, could beat Lucky in a game of "Keep Away" with a bumper. Lucky would take on fifteen dogs at a time. She always won. We have been recently preparing for the June Hunt Tests at Hambden Nursery, which was Lucky's home field. Lucky and I trained with Chuck Tiranno just last weekend. She drove into the water after a one hundred yard land entry on a blind, unwillingly. It was the first time out for a long swim this season. Lucky was cheaty each spring, but soon buckled down and played ball.

Just last week I found my Ray Bans which Lucky chewed up as a puppy (case too). I buried Lucky with them, my Fox 40 (which for my hearing's sake it was time to retire) and some worn torn canvas bumpers, Lucky's personal favorite.
