CH Dark Star of Franklin

CH Dark Star of Franklin was bred and owned by Mrs. B. W. Ziessow. "Dice," as he was affectionately called, was the only puppy in his litter. His dam, CH Pitch of Franklin, was given to the Ziessows by the Huntsman, Carey Rogers, of the Bloomfield Hills Hunt Club. Pitch, Franklin Kennels' foundation bitch, produced Dark Star, who still today holds the record for Best in Show wins for a black American-bred Labrador, eight in all. Pitch also produced FC Discovery of Franklin, trained by Cotton Pershall.

The Ziessows were unable to "sell" Dice so Mrs. Ziessow's father bought Dice for "one hundred dollars." Dice came out of retirement at eight years of age to go Best of Breed at the National Specialty, handled by his breeder, Madge Ziessow.
